National History Day in Delaware is the state branch of National History Day, the nation's leading history education program. Junior and Senior High Students (grades 6-12) are invited to participate. It is estimated that over one million students participate in the program nationally, and in Delaware, 350 students participated in the state competition this year.
Students may select any topic from any time period of history, but must relate their topic to the national theme for the year.
History Day requires students to conduct serious scholarly research using both secondary and primary sources. Students can choose to work in a group or as an individual to write and present a performance, compose and present a documentary,or mount an exhibit. Students can also choose to write a historical paper.
To create a successful entry, students must learn to develop critical thinking skills to place their topic into a broad historical context. History Day complies with all of the National Standards and the Delaware State Standards for history.
"Competing in National History Day was a wonderful experience. Before starting my project, the Holocaust was just...history, but after researching original documents and talking to people who actually participated in these events, I gained a new perspective on history, and it really came alive for me. This program made me want to learn. My exhibit was even publicly displayed and is now on permanent display at Swarthmore College." ~Leah Rusinko, Newark
